[상황별 영어] 마트/쇼핑할 때 꺼내 쓰는 영어

예전에 여행 다닐 때는 영어에 대한 큰 스트레스가 없었다. 여행용으로 필요한 영어는 제한적일 뿐더러 관광객으로서 영어가 어눌한건 당연하다는 생각 때문에 비교적 당당했다. 그랬던 내가 이젠 Hi, Hello 한마디 하는 것도 자신 없이 쪼그러드는 신세가 되었다. 여기 사는 이상 어눌한 영어를 너그럽게 봐주는 사람이 없을테니 한마디라도 제대로 쓰고 싶다는 생각이 오히려 입도 뻥긋 못하게 되는 것 같다.
지난 몇달간은 공포증이 더 생겼는지 모든 대화를 James에게 떠넘겼다. 계속 회피하다간 이 사회에 고립될 것 같은 걱정에 마음을 다잡고 처음부터 영어를 마주해볼까 한다. 이미 알고 있지만 입으로 나오지 않는 가벼운 대화들부터 조질(?) 생각이다. 

처음엔 How are you? 부터 난관이었다. 절대 입밖에 내고 싶지 않은 표현인, "Fine, thank you. and you?"가 그냥 흘러나왔다. 어렸을때부터 얼마나 세뇌되었으면 입에서 그냥 흘러나오는지.. 입을 꿰매고 싶었다. 사람들을 잘 관찰해보니 거의 대부분 파인 땡큐 대신 "I'm good, thank you."를 가장 많이 사용했다. 나도 아임굿 땡큐를 입에 붙이는데만 은근 오래 걸렸다. 역시 나이가 드니까 익숙해지는데 시간이 오래 걸린다.ㅠ

이렇게 쉬운 표현을 자연스럽게 내뱉고 싶은 마음에서, 필요할 때 마다 꺼내 쓰는 상황별 영어를 추려볼까 한다. 첫번째는 내가 가장 많이 가게되는 마트나 쇼핑하면서 사용할만한 영어다. 막상 필요할 때는 떠오르지 않아 답답했던 표현들을 미리 생각해서 익혀놓자!

 

1. 물건 찾을 때

예상질문1) 
- How can I help you?
- See anything you like?
- Are you looking for something in particular?
- Did you find everything you were looking for?

- Where are the canned goods?
- Where is the men's section?
- Where are your wallet?
- Where can I find shoes?
- Could you help me find this item?

예상질문2) 
- Are you being helped?

- Someone already helped me.
- No, but I don't need any help right now.

 

2. 그냥 구경만 할 때

- I'm just checking things out.
- I'm just looking around.
- I will let you know when I need your help, thank you.

 

3. 재고 있는지 물어볼 때

- Can you check in the back?
- Is there any way you can check in the back?
- Do you have this in stock?

 

4. 사이즈/색깔 관련

예상질문) 
- What size are you?

- I'm a size 2.
- Do you have this in a medium? 
- Do you have this sweater in a larger size?
- Does this jacket come in black?
- Do you have this in the next size up?
- Excuse me, do you have these in a size 16 and a half?

 

5. 할인 관련 질문들

- Is it the original price or the markdown price?
- Can I get an additional 20% off (of) this price?
- Is it the final price?
- Is this part of the sale?
- Can I get a discount? (깎아주실 수 있나요?)

예상표현)
- They're on sale.
- That is the bargain.

 

6. 한번 봐도 될까요? / 만져봐도 될까요?

- Could you show that one?
- Can I see that one?
- Can I try that one?
- Can I hold this?

예상표현) 물건을 건네줄 때
- Here you are.
- Here you go. 

 

6-1. 만져보고 마음에 안들 때

- I'm going to think about it.
- It didn't work for me.
- This is too big for me.
- It's not what I expected.

 

7. 상품 관련 질문

- What's the difference between this one and that one?
- What is the latest model?
- Which one would you recommend?
- What's the most popular one?
- How does this work?
- How much is it for 1kg?
- Do you offer a warrenty?

 

8. 교환활 때

- I'd like to exchange this for a different size.
- Can I exchange for a different color?
- Can I get a exchange for me?

 

9. 환불할 때

- I'd like to return it.
- There's something wrong with it. It's defective.
- This doesn't work.
- I bought this yesterday and I thought it was on sale.

10. 환불 여부

11. 포장 여부

12. 이걸로 주세요.

- I'll have it.

13. 계산할 때

- What's the total?

- I want to put it back. (계산대에서 물건 뺄 때)

예상표현) Looks like your total comes to $40.

 

14. 계산에 이상 있을 때

- You owe me a dollar. (1불 덜 주셨어요.)
- You are short two dollars. (2불 덜 주셨어요.)
- You charged me twice for the same item. (같은 상품 두번 결제 되었어요.)
- It was supposed to be 30% off, but you charged me the original price, not the sale price.
- I thought these were buy one get one free, but you charged me the origianl price for both.

15. 기타 질문

- Where do I pay?
- When do you close?
- Can I get a tax refund? I'm a tourist.
- Can you break a 100 dollar bill?
