China says military drills near Taiwan 'completed' after Nancy Pelosi visit
China's military says it has "completed various tasks" around Taiwan potentially signalling an end to days of war games.
China's defence ministry and its Eastern Theatre Command both issued statements which said the exercises had achieved their targets of sending a warning to those favouring Taiwan's formal independence.
"All tasks have accomplished and the troops' combat capabilities in integrated joint operations have been effectively verified," Eastern Theatre Command spokesperson Senior Colonel Shi Yi said.
China said the drills were prompted by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, and it will continue to conduct regular patrols near the island.
Taiwan said Ms Pelosi's visit was routine and China used her trip as a pretext to increase its threats.
Taiwan has warned the Chinese military drills reflect ambitions to control large swaths of the western Pacific.
"The troops of the Eastern Theatre will pay close attention to the evolution of situations across the Taiwan Strait, continue to carry out military training for war preparedness, organise normalised combat-readiness security patrol in the Taiwan Strait, resolutely safeguarding China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity," Colonel Shi said.
Along with lobbing missiles into the Taiwan Strait, the nearly week-long drills saw Chinese ships and planes crossing the centre line in the strait that has long been seen as a buffer against outright conflict.
Last week's drills included launches of ballistic missiles, some of which flew over the island's capital Taipei, and simulated sea and air attacks in surrounding skies and waters.
Taiwan Defence Ministry spokesman Sun Li-fang said Taipei would "fully adjust the allocation of forces based on factors such as the enemy threat".
Ms Pelosi said the United States could not allow China to normalise a new level of pressure on Taiwan.
"What we saw with China is that they were trying to establish sort of a new normal," she said.
"And we just can't let that happen."
Ms Pelosi has said her visit — the highest-level trip to Taiwan by an American official in decades — showed unwavering US commitment to supporting the island's democracy.
The Biden administration said in the coming weeks the US military would carry out routine passages through the Taiwan Strait, which the US government said is an international waterway.
